People and Relationships. We can’t have one without the other right?
Let me tell you a story. One day, a young high school boy meets this girl from his history class. She’s smart, pretty, and very friendly. She introduces herself to him, they become friends. He finds out her favorite color is blue, she finds out he like pistachio ice cream. Her mom is a doctor; his dad is an airline pilot. She tells him her dad died in a car accident, and he tells her that his mom died of cancer.
As time passes by, their relationship deepens and they become the best of friends. She graduates valedictorian while he gets “honorable mention.” They apply for college, and by stroke of fortune they end up going to the same university. On the first day, the boy walks into the classroom and is surprised to see the girl there. He asks her, “Hey. Is this your class too?” and she smiles and says, “Yeah. Just like high school huh?” The boy smiles back and says, “Exactly.”
After the first two years in college, the boy realizes he has feelings for his best friend. So he goes, “Hey, do you want to go out this Friday?” and she replies, “Sure!” He takes her out to her favorite place, and orders her, her favorite meal. They talk for a few hours until he finally manages to choke out the words “I love you.” She laughs and says, “What took you so long to tell me?”
They decide to wait until after graduation to pursue the relationship. They tell their parents about their feelings for each other and gain their (parents) blessing. After graduation, they begin dating. After a year or two, the boy, now a man, pops the question, “Will you marry me?” she says yes. They get hitched and lived happily ever after.
HA. I apologize for the sappy example. I just thought it would be the best way to illustrate a certain principle. Frank Dance described the communication process as a spiral. Starting at one point and getting infinitely bigger and bigger. Basically, communication starts from a single idea and can expand and develop exponentially as time passes.
In the context of relationships, we can view an idea as a friendship. As the friendship or “idea” grows, the relationship develops and deepens. So what I want to say is this, life is like a spiral. It goes down and down and down. KIDDING. Communicate the right way, and your “spiral” will get bigger and bigger. Handle friendships and relationships your family and people the right way, and enjoy more and more meaningful moments with your relatives, and the people you love and care about.
Hey Josh,I really find this very romantic though, hehe. Don't worry though since I enjoy romantic stories a lot, which gives me this "kilig" factor! :)
ReplyDeleteI find what you said very inspiring because we can get the chance to expand our social network with our friends, relatives and loved ones.
You're also right when you said that an idea or friendship grows as you get to deepen your relationship with anyone.
Nice story and hope you can share with me your personal stories as well! =)
Josh! Hahahaha
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your entry especially the story because it made the lesson truly applicable to such a situation. I realized through your blog that if we like who we're with, the spiral will come naturally.
What an unorthodox example :D but it does exhibit the spiral effect really well. Something from really simple goes into something full blown. I think this example can also be used for exhibiting the "field of experience". With the more details they know about each other the more they fell in love with each other. :D
ReplyDeleteTrue comparison, Josh. Over time communication does get modified and constantly developing is our relationship with the person we are trying to convey a message towards and understand. Our sphere of interaction can only widen so long as we are exposed to the people in question.
ReplyDeleteSappy, indeed! But very true. That's essentially what the spiral model says: communication grows, develops, expands and improves... and there's no stopping it.
ReplyDeleteWhat really caught my attention, though, was your entry's TITLE. Ugh, if only I could. Damn diet.
hey josh, really nice story hahaha. But yes, communication really is a spiral that starts from somewhere, and that through time we should allow it to grow and widen. And that it is through allowing our relationships to grow that we are able to deepen it and make quality ones through the use of communication!
